2022-2023 High-leverage Practices Pathways:
Pathway #1: Emergent Storybook Reading
Based on the work of Elizabeth Sulzby, Emergent Storybook Reading involves immersing students in the repeated reading of rich storybooks, which are purposefully selected based on a clear set of criteria. The Emergent Storybook Reading framework provides a predictable and purposeful structure for supporting students’ language development, speaking and listening skills, understanding of concepts of print, comprehension skills, and understanding of the genre of narrative texts. If you are looking for a way to build one of the key elements in future reading comprehension: listening comprehension -- all in a joyful, authentic, and playful manner, then this pathway is for you! Throughout our year together, you will be supported in developing a deep understanding of Emergent Storybook Reading, its purpose, and how it may be incorporated within your 4K program (half-day or full-day). You will also have the opportunity to engage in supported planning time so that you can take what you learn and have actionable plans to bring back to your classroom. Finally, throughout the year you will be introduced to a rich array of texts that can be used to support the instructional context of Emergent Storybook Reading within your classroom.

Pathway #2: Name Study
Each year, our classroom invites a new community of learners, each of whom brings with them something very personal and special: their name. While traditionally viewed as a key piece of environmental print, names often appear on cubbies, tables, and other spaces around the classroom. But…it doesn’t have to stop there! Have you ever wondered how else you can use the words that are most meaningful to students (their names) to help establish a welcoming learning community and support a range of early literacy skills, from concepts of print to phonological awareness and phonics? Then this pathway is for you! Throughout our year together, you will be supported in developing a deep understanding of Name Study, its purpose, and how it may be incorporated within your 4K program (half-day or full-day). You will also have the opportunity to engage in supported planning time so that you can take what you learn and have actionable plans to bring back to your classroom. We look forward to having you join us to learn more about how to leverage the power of names to support many skills in a way that feels engaging, playful, and literacy-rich.
