When a student’s speech/language functioning appears to affect his/her educational performance or development, a school SLP should be contacted. Although SLPs cannot conduct individual screenings, an SLP may provide the student’s teacher and/or parent/caregiver with general information on universal remediation strategies that can be used with the student in the classroom or home environment. If after a reasonable period of time, the student continues to display speech/language deficits that interfere with educational progress, a referral for a special education evaluation may be initiated.
SLPs employed by CESA 6 may be contracted by schools or outside agencies for S/L therapy services, evaluations, consultations and ASHA CF supervision if available.
