Comprehensive AAC evaluation may be used to identify areas of strength and need for the student with complex communication needs (CCN) in order to make appropriate recommendations for communication systems. Students with CCN typically are students that receive services under a variety of diagnoses, including intellectual disability (ID), OHI, and autism; and may have identified needs in the area of O&M, OT/PT and vision.
CESA 6 AAC services include:
- Making recommendations for communication systems for trial, based on comprehensive evaluation results and appropriate to student needs
- Locating and acquiring high tech devices and resources for low tech systems in order to carry out trial periods or implement systems
- Help with goal writing and data collection methods during trial periods and for IEP documentation
- Support the IEP team in the funding process when dedicated device purchase is warranted
- Education and training of staff and IEP team on communication system use
- Collaboration with district teams to establish comfort and competence in facilitating student progress with the identified communication system
- Provide professional development and resources related to AAC to staff and parents.
