Reimagining Small Group Instruction and Independent Reading
Classroom teachers in grades 3-5 and Coaches, take a deep dive with us to build the knowledge and tools needed to support differentiated instruction in reading through small group instruction and independent reading practices to increase student achievement.
OBJECTIVES
Grow your knowledge and understanding of small-group differentiated instruction
Explore shifts in independent reading practices
Build knowledge and understanding of high-impact student assessment and data practices
Learn and implement high-leverage instructional strategies
Build capacity for practice change in literacy instruction
Receive support in planning and scheduling small group instruction and independent reading
Through professional learning and the opportunity to network with other teachers as part of a learning community, your CESA 6 Literacy team will provide coordinated support that promotes continuous improvement in literacy instruction in the classroom.
PREREQUISITES
Participant has:
Attended the CESA 6 Intermediate Literacy Leadership Academy
OR
Attended the January 16, 2024 workshop facilitated by Jan Burkins and Kari Yates, Shifting the Balance 3-5: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Upper Elementary Classroom
OR
Completed a book study of one or more of the following texts:
Shifting the Balance 3-5: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Upper Elementary Classroom (Cunningham, Burkins, and Yates)
The Reading Comprehension Blueprint: Helping Students Make Meaning from Text (Nancy Lewis Hennessy)
Teaching Reading: A Playbook for Developing Skilled Readers Through Word Recognition and Language Comprehension (Fisher, Frey, and Lapp)

Cost*: $600 per person
* For every three (3) teachers registered from the same school, a free seat for an administrator
* For every three (3) coaches registered from the same district, a free seat for an administrator

OPTIONAL ADD-ON SERVICES
In-district coaching to support implementation can include any or all of the following options:
Coaching side-by-side with coaching staff to increase their capacity to support teachers with these new practices
Coaching teachers along a gradual release continuum in planning and implementing instruction:

Investigating onsite the current state of differentiated instruction to find out the first steps needed to implement small groups

A registration cancellation must be received at least 10 business days before the event for a full refund to be issued. The ESSA Monitoring Support Service is designed to communicate federal and state legislation, policies, and requirements related to Titles I-IV. Participants will be provided with an electronic binder and sample documents outlining their responsibilities for compliance based upon the updated Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WI DPI) monitoring guidance.
